The Story of the Potluck

Emmy Bean's hot tatoo
The Potluck was born in June of 2006 when Emmy Bean (an actor), Julia Holleman (a playwright), and Heidi Handelsman (a director) were drinking beer in a bar in Manhattan. Emmy said, wistfully, "Wouldn't it be great if there was a play-reading series that was also a potluck? So everyone would bring food to someone's apartment, and we all read a play?" Julia and Heidi agreed that this was a great idea. Then Heidi looked around the table and said, "Hey, here we are, a playwright, an actor, and a director. Julia, have you got a play you'd like to hear out loud? And can Emmy be in it?" Julia said yes, and Heidi offered up her apartment. The first ever Potluck happened less than two weeks later.
Since then, Heidi Handelsman has organized, curated, and hosted over 30 potluck play-readings in her living room.
The Potluck has served over 30 playwrights to date, and collaborates with an ever-expanding pool of fantastic actors.
